Where have you been all my life, Books on CD?
I had been dreading the prospect of this week and next, when Olivia and I must drive long hours to and from a series of appointments she needs. But that was before I stumbled upon the “Books on CD” shelves in the kids’ section of our public library and discovered the dozens of stories waiting to be heard. A revelation, and a revolution. Never again will I view a car trip in the same way.
Monday through Wednesday, we listened to Cheaper By the Dozen, by Frank B. Gilbreth, Jr. and Ernestine Gilbreth Carey, read by Dana Ivey. As a 244-page book, this is not a selection Olivia would ever read. But Dana Ivey is a wonderful actress and Cheaper by the Dozen a hilarious and very well-written tale. Olivia loved it. We both did.
Today, we start on another classic, Old Yeller. I’ll let you know how it goes.

I still try to have a book in the cd player of my car as I drive around town. Makes the commutes so enjoyable as I am a word person rather than a music person. (Sometimes NPR just gets too depressing.)
We love books on CD! Our daughter who just turned 6 (and is also from Guatemala) attends a spanish immersion school. It is awesome but the commute is 30-40 minutes each way. My husband takes her in the morning on his way to work and I pick her up so she is always listening to 2 stories simultaneously. We have listened to everything from the Ramona Quimby series (Beverly Cleary) to Wizard of Oz, Alice in Wonderland! We have been doing this for a couple of years and feel lost if we didn’t get to the library in time and don’t have a book going in one of our cars!
Christine, I hear you about NPR. Keeping an audible book in the car at all times is a great solution for that, and for long drives. Thank you!
Kelli: What an inspiration! First, Spanish immersion school–fabulous–and then books on CD for the commute. We’ll add your suggestions to our list. Thanks!
